I'm Offended!

There is a lie that is being perpetuated within our society today that people should never be offended. But it's even more than that, not only should they never be offended anything that offends should be banned!

Now, last I heard this country had something unique in it's Declaration of Independence. We have the Freedom of Speech. This means that we have the freedom to express our ideas and thoughts, no matter what they are. Quite literally this means that each of us freely gives others the right to offend us.

There are as many sets of opinions as there are people. We each have decided throughout our lives what we do and do not like and believe. Our experiences in life are all different and because of this our opinions are as well. Because of this difference it is not possible to have an opinion that doesn't offend someone, somewhere.

By taking away people's right to offend others you take away their right to free speech. By allowing others the ability to speak their minds freely you give them the ability to offend you.

This is not something new. So, what has changed then to bring up all of this stuff about not being able to offend others? There used to be something that was ingrained in people from the time that they were old enough to speak that has fallen into disuse. People called it courtesy and having manners. It meant that if you knew that someone had a different opinion you could agree to disagree. That we could respect opinions that are different from our own.

These things (respect, courtesy and manners) are no longer considered necessities. They are not being taught to kids and are no longer common expectations. You are no longer allowed to agree to disagree, someone has to be right.

So, the question then becomes if someone has to be right who decides? The government has decided that it is the only one with the ability to decide. If you disagree with what they say, whether or not it goes against existing laws and policies, then you are not only wrong but evil and dangerous. They want to trick us into giving away our own freedoms for the sake of not being wrong.

I would rather be wrong every day of my life and keep my freedom than deny you of yours. The people of this country no longer understand how lucky we are to be the land of the free. I just hope that we don't remember the hard way.
